Operation Catnip & Feral Cats
Feral cats were never intended to be part of our native landscape here and honestly they are responsible for the elimination of a great number of native birds in this area. As a professional, here in this community I feel it is my responsibility to explain the many options available to address
this issue. Like the FWC [Florida Wildlife Commission], everyone realizes the sensitivity of addressing potential community problems.
Here is a program similar to Operation Cat Nip

Here in the Greater Gainesville Area, we locally are participating in a great project that helps to drastically reduce the growth of feral colonies in our area. This program is called Operation Catnip this An all-volunteer organization dedicated to humanely reducing stray and feral cat populations through sterilization.
Trap, Neuter and Return, commonly referred to as “TNR,” is the only method proven to be humane and effective at controlling feral cat population growth. Using this technique, all the feral cats in a colony are trapped, neutered and then returned to their territory where caretakers provide them with regular food and shelter. Young kittens who can still be socialized, as well as friendly adults, are placed in foster care and eventually adopted out to good homes. My services are available for a fee to humanely capture feral cats. I use my own equipment and care for the animals until their return . I however will not personally release the animals and a third party will have to handle that part of the job. Locally cats will be checked for diseases, given rabies shots , spayed and neutered and if necessary given appropriate treatments under the direction of a state licensed veterinarian.
You can also call your local Animal Control office to trap and remove these animals and more then likely will be euthanized. You can contact Alachua Animal Control services by clicking here.
